Audeince Profile

The audience of my magazine that I will produce is people who like to have fun, they go to parties on the weekend and they go clubbing to see their favourite DJ's. The age of the audience would be 18-25 as this is the age where they go out drinking and have fun. They want to go to the biggest clubs to listen to music that get them moving on the dancefloor. The magazine would be for males and females as males and females go out to the clubs and have a drink. The audience would be individualists as they want to be different from the rest of the world. The music is different to other genres so the they people that enjoy dubstep are people who like to be different. They would where the latest fashion and wear clothes that no one else wheres. Some of the males may have their hair dyed so they can stand out in the crowd on the dancefloor. They would go as a group on a holiday to get drunk everyday and go to Ibiza where it's the nightclubbing capital of the world. The audience would enjoy listening to Radio 1 on Friday nights so they can listen to their kind of music when they are getting ready to go out to the their local nightclub. They would be on the bottom on the jicnar scale c2 and lower, this is because they are poor students or have little money because they spend money on pointless things like energy drinks or very expensive clothes.

Main Task: Summary of Research into Existing Magazines

The summary of the magzines is that the magazines that I have looked at they all have a target audience that they try to meet. For example the audience for Kerrang is different compared to Mixmag as Kerrang are people who enjoy listening to rock/heavy metal. Mixmag is people who listen to dance music and have different lifestyle to ones who read Kerrang. The audience of the people who read the magazines have a different lifestyle. Every magazine is different and it hits different audiences. Magazine use different images and texts to make the audience that they want to target. Kerrang has bold dark colours rather than Mixmag has bright and vibrant colours. I can use the ideas they have produce into my production of the magazine. T am doing a Dubstep magazine which is a form of dance music. Mixmag is specialised in dance music so the ideas that they use I can use in a similar way.

Main Task: Distribution Independant Distributor

An example of a distributor is Vice who have their own distribution and network. Vice has much more niche audience which is people who like rock n roll and heavy metal music. They do various platforms like film, DVD, books and different events. The audience would be for people who enjoy this type of music that I have stated above, they would enjoy drinking and getting drunk, they may take drugs once in a while to have a good time. The audience also can use a range of platforms like the web, DVDs and books. The brand identity is that Vice hit a range of audience they try to succeed with the young by having websites, films and DVDs. Vice also do books which targets the older audience as teenagers today hardly ever read.

The distribution strategy is different to the major distributors like Frontline. Vice distribution is smaller than Frontline as they only distribute in unknown retail businesses like for example in Birmingham they distribute to place like Urban Outfitters, Size, Studio 4 and Tempest. All these places are well unknown and not many people have heard in them. Theses are all fashion shops and this may show that they have to push the boat out to make there business work and make more money than other independent distributors.
Vice is hitting the younger audience as they distribute over different shops and other places that students would go to. They use multi platform consumption effectively as they use several ways to attract their audience. They are different to other distributors in the way that they go into the fashion world. Students are into fashion and want the latest things. Vice uses this effectively by distributing in many areas.
I would use a independent distributor because this would be easier to get my magazine publicised. Frontline is such a big company it would be more difficult to get into the company. The independent companies are more flexible. Vice would be a suitable distributor as they use multi platform strategy. They distribute in many areas that would suit my audience of my magazine. They distribute in fashion shops and DVD's.

MainTask: Disribution Major Distributer

There are major and independent distributors and suppliers. They have different strategies in that the major distributors have more money to spend and get a large audience. Independent distributors have smaller budgets and they can't afford to spend too much money on their marketing to get people in the music industry use them. An example of a major distributor is Frontline. Frontline sells and distributes over 160 of magazine titles including 54 of the top 200 best selling titles. They sell over 8 million copies of magazines over 55,000 shops.

This is Frontline supply chain and who they distribute to so they can sell their magazines. They distribute to Major publishers like Bauer, Haymarket and the BBC.

Bauer is a leading magazine publisher who publish magazines like Kerrang and Mojo. They also publish top women's magazines like Heat, Bella and Take a Break. They have always been the no.1 magazine publisher which shows as they publish big magazines which attract a wide audience. Together with sixteen successful puzzle titles within the stable, H. Bauer has always had a major presence in the UK magazine market with a considerable market share. Bauer is now the largest consumer magazine publishing company in the UK, playing a primary role in the Women’s Weeklies, Women’s Interest, Women’s Lifestyle, TV Listings, Puzzles, Men’s Lifestyle, Music & Film and Specialist magazine markets. Bauer entered the U.K. scene with Bella magazine in 1987. Introducing a new format that mixes previously unseen real life editorial and exciting service features, Bella made a significant impact on the women's market.

Example:
Q Magazine: Q magazine sees the life through the lens of music, it draws references to music, sport, comedy, film and even politics. Q magazine also encompasses with the Q radio. Q uses multi platform strategy where Q is available as a magazine, a radio station, their own website, on TV like Sky and Virgin Media and lastly they have their own awards, the Q Awards. All these platforms hits every type of audience as the young go the Internet a lot and the old tend to listen to radio and watch TV rather tan spending their lives in front of a computer.

Audience Profile:
Open minded experience seekers, the Q audience don’t define themselves by the music they listen to. Music is an important passion, but their love of music will never be to the detriment of their other passions, such as film, sport and comedy.

Main Task: Magazine Review

Title: Mixmag

Audience: Mixmag magazine connotes partying, Ibiza, summer sun, clubbing, drinking. This magazine is mainly meant to be read by men as there is a women in a seductive stance and only wearing a bikini. Comparing this to Kerrang it has brighter colours rather then dull colours that aren't inspiring. These people would be hedonists as they like to enjoy life now. The audience like a whole range of music that gets them going and makes them move. These people actually enjoy music like this rather than others who just once in a while and have a 'rave'. The age range of this audience is young between 16-25. Mainly 18+ as you are able to drink and go to nightclubs. The magazine attracts the male audience rather female due to having women being seductive on the front cover. People would read this and aspire to go to Ibiza a meet a girl like that. The magazine also promotes fashion as the magazine includes fashion tips so you look good when you go to a nightclub. The woman on the front cover connotes wealth as the the woman is in hot sunny place which is not in Britain and she is wearing a lot of gold which signals wealth. Mixmag publisher is Development Hell and they Hell relaunched Mixmag in May 2006 with a revamped design and the aim of appealing to a wider (both male and female) and older readership than had been targeted by EMAP there former publishers.

Main contents: There are several interviews including Fedde Le Grand meets Will.i.am. There are reviews of new albums, and fashion for your clubbing needs. All the contents is related to the genre of the music. There are artists that are DJ's and perform music. There are pages on the top downloads which gives evidence that this is for teenagers and young adults as they are the age that download music a lot.

Main Task: Magazine Review

Title: Kerrang

Audience: This is for people who are in the category of C1 and C2 of the jicnar scale and they are hedonists and individualists as they like to have fun now and are different form other people. The magazine connotes moshpits and skateboarders. The audience for this magazine would be for people who enjoy rock music. Kerrang magazine specialises in the genre of rocker music. Rock music is associated with dark colours like red and black. On the front cover of the magazine it doesn't have various amounts of colour because it only has colours of red, white and black which are very plain and ordinary. The person on the front cover is a typical rock star as she is throwing a punch. This is a typical rock star as they are people who like to throw there weight around and think they are tough as rock music is seen as heavy music. The magazine is for teenagers as it is not sophisticated like mojo magazine. Kerrang is set for the audience of teenagers because teenagers are seen as not nice people and they try to address this on the main masthead. EMAP sold its consumer magazine to current owner Bauer Media Group in 2008.

Here it says 'I am who I am with no apologies'. This is similar to teenagers as many people see them as individualists and teenagers do what they want and say what they want. So this magazine age range is between 16-19.

Contents: In the latest issue of Kerrang! magazine, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams gives her most revealing interview yet! Also in this week's issue: We go behind the scenes of the Taste Of Chaos tour with Killswitch Engage, In Flames and Every Time I Die, Coheed & Cambria exclusively reveal their new album plans, Fred Durst calls K! Towers with a very special Limp Bizkit update, and Satryicon tell us why they've gone on hiatus.
The contents of this magazine makes the point of being a teenage magazine as it is set as not being sophisticated, it is straight at you rather than the magazine of Mojo it isn't so at your face. As the contents in the Kerrang magazine is in your face as every sentence finishes with a exclamation mark.

Main Task: Magazine Review

Title: Mojo

The Audience: Firstly, the magazine connotes beer drinking and a mam's night out. This magazine connotes power and fashion. The band Oasis is on the front cover and they are standing in a powerful pose and demeaning. They promote fashion as all of them are wearing fashionable clothes and the audience reading the magazine would be the same. In this magazine a medium close up is used for all the band members, which incorporates the way they are seen powerful. This matches the dominant ideology as men are seen as the powerful genre. The audience are traditionalists, like things the way they are and people who are c1 in the jicnar scale or possibly B because the magazine has some sophistication. The magazine is a sophisticated magazine and is not aimed for teenagers but for young adults aged 20-26 because the age of the bands that they cover are at a similar age or above, these bands do not appeal to young teenagers. It more likely to see men read this magazine than women as the bands are liked mostly by men and the music is set out for men to follow and like. This is for people who only like one type of music and that is indie. These are people who are succeeders because they have done what they have wanted to do in life, they are also achievers as they want to achieve the best in their life. Mojo magazine is published like Kerrang through Bauer Media Group. This company is very successful as they are signing the big magazines that people buy.

Main Contents: Free CD with 15 tracks within. Main feature of Oasis. A 2008 review with their ultimate bands like Duffy, Fleet Foxes and U2, plus 50 top albums.

Main Task: Magazines Initial Research

The initial research is to find magazines of different musical genres but also including a genre that is similar to the magazine that I am going to do. The three magazines that I am going to choose is Mojo magazine, Kerrang and Mixmag. These are all different genres with Mojo being indie music, Kerrang being rock music and lastly Mixmag being a dance magazine. Mixmag is the magazine that is going to be similar to mine that I am going to produce as I'm going to make a dubstep magazine which is a form of dance music.
